Nichelle Nichols is an actress and singer best known for playing Lt. Nyota Uhura in "Star Trek: The Original Series."

Early Life

Grace Dell Nichols was born on December 28, 1932 in Robbins, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

Debut Work

Nichols' break came in 1961's highly acclaimed but doomed musical Kicks & Co., directed by Oscar Brown.

Star Trek

Nichols was one of the first Black women to play a bridge officer in a significant supporting role on Star Trek.


American minister Martin Luther King Jr. called it "the first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a Black woman in television history."

Work with NASA

She volunteered her time on a special project with NASA to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency.


In 2016, Nichols became the first female recipient of the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films' Life Career Award.


On July 30, 2022, Nichols, then 89 years old, passed away in Silver City, New Mexico, from heart failure.
